the Photograph
Off the coast at Wicklow Port, a cargo ship moves steadily away from land, its form small against the wide expanse of sea and sky. In the foreground, low rocks sit partially submerged, their edges softened by the continuous movement of water around them.
The photograph is rendered in black and white, drawing attention to contrast and motion rather than colour. The smooth surface of the sea, shaped by long exposure, contrasts with the solid weight of the rocks, while layered cloud formations stretch across the sky, reinforcing a sense of passage and distance.
In print, the tonal range across sky and water becomes more nuanced. Subtle variations in the clouds and the gentle blur of moving water emerge gradually, while the darker mass of the rocks anchors the composition, giving the image a quiet balance between movement and stillness.
