Cloud and sea blur into quiet motion around Burke’s Island off the Copper Coast.

the Photograph
Off Kilfarrasy Cove on the Waterford coast, Burke’s Island sits low against the horizon as cloud and sea move continuously around it. The landform remains fixed while the surrounding elements soften and stretch, shaped by the passage of time rather than a single moment.
Presented in black and white, the image emphasises tone, balance, and negative space. Long exposure smooths the surface of the sea into a gentle tonal field, while the sky becomes layered and directional, its movement echoed subtly across the water. The island itself forms a dark, grounded counterpoint, anchoring the composition within an otherwise fluid scene.
In print, the transition between the luminous sky and the darker sea becomes more pronounced, revealing fine gradations that are easily lost on screen. The softened water takes on a velvety depth, while the island’s textured silhouette gains quiet weight, allowing the image to hold a sense of stillness even as motion is implied.

the Print
Printing is treated not as a final step, but as a continuation of the work, refining tone, balance, and texture until the print feels true to the original experience. Each photograph is produced as a signed Fine Art Giclée print, carefully inspected by me before it leaves my studio.
Prints are offered in five sizes, Companion, Artist, Studio, Gallery, and Master. The range is intentionally limited, allowing the image to be experienced at a scale that feels right, from an intimate print to a larger piece with stronger presence.
Smaller editions are printed by me personally, while larger works are produced in close collaboration with a trusted fine art printer in Ireland. All prints are made using archival papers from Hahnemühle and Canson, combined with genuine Epson pigment inks, chosen for their tonal subtlety and long-term permanence. Every print is backed by my satisfaction, replacement, and lifetime fade-free guarantees. Find out more about my printing process here.
