First light warms the clouds above Carrauntoohil as Lough Caragh lies still beneath.

the Photograph
At dawn, the first warmth of morning light spreads across the sky above Carrauntoohil, softening the clouds as they drift over Lough Caragh in County Kerry. The mountains remain in shadow, their outlines gently revealed as the day begins, while the lake below holds the light in quiet reflection.
The composition is built around contrast and restraint. Warm colour gathers in the upper sky while cooler tones settle across the water, creating a calm dialogue between light and shadow. The long exposure smooths the surface of the lake, allowing reflections to form as subtle bands rather than precise mirrors, reinforcing the sense of stillness and early-morning calm.
In print, the image reveals a deeper tonal range. The transition between warm sky and cool water becomes more nuanced, with delicate gradations emerging in the clouds and their reflections. Darker mountain silhouettes retain their presence without overpowering the scene, giving the photograph a quiet depth that invites sustained viewing.

the Print
Printing is treated not as a final step, but as a continuation of the work, refining tone, balance, and texture until the print feels true to the original experience. Each photograph is produced as a signed Fine Art Giclée print, carefully inspected by me before it leaves my studio.
Prints are offered in five sizes, Companion, Artist, Studio, Gallery, and Master. The range is intentionally limited, allowing the image to be experienced at a scale that feels right, from an intimate print to a larger piece with stronger presence.
Smaller editions are printed by me personally, while larger works are produced in close collaboration with a trusted fine art printer in Ireland. All prints are made using archival papers from Hahnemühle and Canson, combined with genuine Epson pigment inks, chosen for their tonal subtlety and long-term permanence. Every print is backed by my satisfaction, replacement, and lifetime fade-free guarantees. Find out more about my printing process here.
