Receding water sweeps around a dark volcanic rock beneath Madeira’s cliffs, giving this black-and-white seascape a strong sense of movement and weight.

the Photograph

A dark volcanic rock sits low within the portrait frame as the tide draws around it and back across the beach. The harbour wall enters from the left, balanced by the much greater mass of the cliffs on the right. Between them, water, spray and distant land merge through progressively softer tones beneath a sky filled with broad, unsettled cloud.

The conversion to black and white distils the photograph into solid and transient forms. Rock, wall and cliff contain the composition, while water and cloud appear to move away from the viewer. That contrast gives the image its tension, preserving the force of the weather without allowing it to overwhelm the underlying structure.

In print, the volcanic sand and foreground rock settle into dense, velvety blacks, while the water, spray and cloud separate through a broad range of silvery greys. Archival pigment inks preserve these fine tonal transitions within the surface of the paper, giving the water greater body and the distant cliffs a more gradual sense of recession. The finished Fine Art Giclée gives lasting physical form to a scene defined by movement.

the Print

Printing is treated not as a final step, but as a continuation of the work, refining tone, balance, and texture until the print feels true to the original experience. Each photograph is produced as a signed Fine Art Giclée print, carefully inspected by me before it leaves my studio.

Prints are offered in five sizes, Companion, Artist, Studio, Gallery, and Master. The range is intentionally limited, allowing the image to be experienced at a scale that feels right, from an intimate print to a larger piece with stronger presence.

Smaller editions are printed by me personally, while larger works are produced in close collaboration with a trusted fine art printer in Ireland. All prints are made using archival papers from Hahnemühle and Canson, combined with genuine Epson pigment inks, chosen for their tonal subtlety and long-term permanence. Every print is backed by my satisfaction, replacement, and lifetime fade-free guarantees. Find out more about my printing process here.
