Viewed from the bridge in Valletta, St Elmo Lighthouse sits quietly at the edge of the harbour as the sea stretches out in calm, even planes. Soft Mediterranean light and a cloudless sky reduce the scene to its essentials, allowing water, sky, and structure to settle into a balanced, minimal composition.
Colour and simplicity define the image. Cool blues dominate the sea and sky, gently offset by the pale stone of the breakwater and lighthouse. With little surface detail to distract the eye, attention rests on proportion and spacing, where the lighthouse becomes a precise marker within a broad field of stillness.
In print, the smooth gradation across the water remains continuous rather than breaking into texture, reinforcing the sense of calm openness. The clean edge of the breakwater and the lighthouse’s vertical form stay crisply defined against the surrounding space, preserving the image’s quiet clarity and restraint beyond the screen
