Storm light and calm water meet as the sun rises toward Morris Island Lighthouse.

the Photograph

At sunrise from Rat Island in Charleston County, warm light spreads across the Atlantic as Morris Island Lighthouse stands low on the horizon. The shoreline remains quiet, marked by soft sand and fading footprints, while the sea settles into a gentle, measured rhythm beneath an unsettled sky.

Colour and atmosphere shape the scene. Subtle warmth near the horizon contrasts with cooler greys and violets in the advancing storm clouds above, creating a restrained tension between light and weather. The lighthouse holds steady within this shifting balance, its distant form acting as a visual anchor amid movement and change.

In print, the separation between the smooth surface of the water and the textured sky becomes more pronounced, allowing cloud structure and tonal depth to hold without overwhelming the frame. The gradual transition from illuminated water to darkened cloud preserves the image’s sense of quiet anticipation and solitude beyond the screen.

the Print

Printing is treated not as a final step, but as a continuation of the work, refining tone, balance, and texture until the print feels true to the original experience. Each photograph is produced as a signed Fine Art Giclée print, carefully inspected by me before it leaves my studio.

Prints are offered in five sizes, Companion, Artist, Studio, Gallery, and Master. The range is intentionally limited, allowing the image to be experienced at a scale that feels right, from an intimate print to a larger piece with stronger presence.

Smaller editions are printed by me personally, while larger works are produced in close collaboration with a trusted fine art printer in Ireland. All prints are made using archival papers from Hahnemühle and Canson, combined with genuine Epson pigment inks, chosen for their tonal subtlety and long-term permanence. Every print is backed by my satisfaction, replacement, and lifetime fade-free guarantees. Find out more about my printing process here.
