A minimalist study of receding tide and coastal form at Portsalon Beach.

the Photograph
The vast expanse of Portsalon Beach is reduced here to its most fundamental elements. Captured during an eight-minute exposure as the sun began to settle, the movement of the North Atlantic is distilled into a soft, ethereal veil. There is a profound sense of stillness in this corner of Donegal; the distant hills of the Fanad Peninsula remain anchored in the soft light, while the shoreline exists in a state of quiet transition between the land and the receding sea.
The image leans into restraint. Long exposure transforms the sea into a silken wash, reducing movement to tone and flow. The geometry is simple yet deliberate, the sand’s curved edge guiding the eye outward toward the calm, layered blues of water and atmosphere. Subtle colour transitions and soft light keep the scene contemplative rather than dramatic.
In print, the fine grain of the sand becomes tactile, revealing delicate tonal shifts from ochre to pale gold that are easily lost on screen. The transition between the creamy water and the firmer sand edge gains clarity, giving the curve greater presence. The distant headlands settle into nuanced gradients of blue and grey, lending the work a quiet depth that unfolds slowly the longer it is viewed.

the Print
Printing is treated not as a final step, but as a continuation of the work, refining tone, balance, and texture until the print feels true to the original experience. Each photograph is produced as a signed Fine Art Giclée print, carefully inspected by me before it leaves my studio.
Prints are offered in five sizes, Companion, Artist, Studio, Gallery, and Master. The range is intentionally limited, allowing the image to be experienced at a scale that feels right, from an intimate print to a larger piece with stronger presence.
Smaller editions are printed by me personally, while larger works are produced in close collaboration with a trusted fine art printer in Ireland. All prints are made using archival papers from Hahnemühle and Canson, combined with genuine Epson pigment inks, chosen for their tonal subtlety and long-term permanence. Every print is backed by my satisfaction, replacement, and lifetime fade-free guarantees. Find out more about my printing process here.
