Ayr, Scotland • Sep 20th, 2015

An ancient stone dovecot crowns the hillside above Ayr’s quiet shore.

the Photograph

Seen from the beach near Ayr, the 15th-century dovecot of Dunure Castle rises alone on a grassy slope, set cleanly against the coastal sky. Its rounded, beehive form feels both grounded and watchful, a small human structure holding its place at the edge of land and sea.

Rendered in black and white, the photograph emphasises form and proportion over detail. The solid mass of stone contrasts with the open sweep of sky above, while the gentle rise of the hill leads the eye upward toward the building. With colour removed, the scene becomes a study in simplicity and restraint, where age and isolation quietly define the mood.

In print, the rough texture of the stonework remains distinct from the softer grasses surrounding it, allowing the dovecot’s weight and presence to feel tangible. The smooth tonal falloff in the sky holds without distraction, keeping attention on the relationship between structure, ground, and open space beyond the screen.

the Print

Printing is treated not as a final step, but as a continuation of the work, refining tone, balance, and texture until the print feels true to the original experience. Each photograph is produced as a signed Fine Art Giclée print, carefully inspected by me before it leaves my studio.

Prints are offered in five sizes, Companion, Artist, Studio, Gallery, and Master. The range is intentionally limited, allowing the image to be experienced at a scale that feels right, from an intimate print to a larger piece with stronger presence.

Smaller editions are printed by me personally, while larger works are produced in close collaboration with a trusted fine art printer in Ireland. All prints are made using archival papers from Hahnemühle and Canson, combined with genuine Epson pigment inks, chosen for their tonal subtlety and long-term permanence. Every print is backed by my satisfaction, replacement, and lifetime fade-free guarantees. Find out more about my printing process here.
