Still water and repeating arches dissolve into silence beneath Boscombe Pier.

the Photograph

At dawn beneath Boscombe Pier in Bournemouth on England’s south coast, the sea settles into near stillness as first light filters through the structure above. The pier’s arches recede into mist, their reflections stretching softly across the water as the boundary between sea, air, and form begins to blur.

Rendered in black and white, the photograph emphasises geometry and tonal balance over detail. Dark columns and overhead beams frame pale openings beyond, creating a measured rhythm that guides the eye inward. With colour removed, attention rests on repetition, symmetry, and the quiet interplay between solid structure and open space.

In print, the subtle tonal shifts within the water remain continuous rather than breaking apart, preserving the mirror-like reflections beneath each arch. The gradation from deep shadow to soft light holds its separation without harsh edges, allowing the image’s sense of depth and calm suspension to persist beyond the screen.

the Print

Printing is treated not as a final step, but as a continuation of the work, refining tone, balance, and texture until the print feels true to the original experience. Each photograph is produced as a signed Fine Art Giclée print, carefully inspected by me before it leaves my studio.

Prints are offered in five sizes, Companion, Artist, Studio, Gallery, and Master. The range is intentionally limited, allowing the image to be experienced at a scale that feels right, from an intimate print to a larger piece with stronger presence.

Smaller editions are printed by me personally, while larger works are produced in close collaboration with a trusted fine art printer in Ireland. All prints are made using archival papers from Hahnemühle and Canson, combined with genuine Epson pigment inks, chosen for their tonal subtlety and long-term permanence. Every print is backed by my satisfaction, replacement, and lifetime fade-free guarantees. Find out more about my printing process here.
