“It is only through labor and painful effort, by grim energy and resolute courage, that we move on to better things. ~ Theodore Roosevelt

I continue to work through my back-catalogue of images from my time in Dorset late last year. This, as you may have noted is unlike every image I have produced from that trip so far in that is not of the sea 🙂 It is in fact the remains Corfe Castle which was built by William the Conqueror. The castle dates back to the 11th century and commands a gap in the Purbeck Hills on the route between Wareham and Swanage. A small group of us were returning from an afternoon shooting at Kimmeridge Bay and decided to try the castle for a sunset. Unfortunately we arrived too late and the gates were closed. Undeterred we decided to try our hand shooting the castle from the gates.

I used my 80m prime Mamiya lens to isolate the castle against the sky. It was a calm evening with little cloud cover so I needed to use 12 stops of ND Filters to extend the exposure long enough to build up the cloud cover and sense of movement.

You can find more images from the Dorset in my Europe & Beyond portfolio or in my Seascapes & Shorelines portfolio.
